WHY PRIMARY TEETH ARE IMPORTANT

Children’s primary (baby) teeth play a key role in dental development. They are important as they not only hold space for permanent teeth, but they are essential for chewing, biting, speaking and appearance. In addition, they guide the permanent teeth into place. This is why it’s very important to maintain a healthy diet and good daily oral hygiene.
Since primary teeth guide the permanent teeth into place, young children with missing primary teeth or who prematurely lose primary teeth may require a space maintainer, a device used to hold the natural space open. Without a maintainer, the teeth can tilt toward the empty space and cause permanent teeth to come in crooked. Your child establishes oral hygiene habits with his or her baby teeth, so they play a critical role in how he/she treats permanent teeth. Children are just as susceptible to plaque and gum problems as adults, so the need for regular care and dental checkups is equally as important.
